October 16, 2006, NEW DELHI: Isha Foundation, the Coimbatore based NGO associated with the Department of Public Information of the United Nations will attempt to create history on October 17. In a bid to enter the Guinness Records, 250,000 volunteers of the Foundation will plant 700,000 saplings in Tamil Nadu in a single day.

Project Green Hands stands apart from other plantation initiatives due to the expansiveness of the project that will cover 28 districts including Chennai, Coimbatore, Cuddalore and Salem. Isha Foundation aims to encourage school children and people in rural areas to be a part of the project.

The planting of a record 700,000 saplings in a single day through Project Green Hands will be the highest number in the world so far. According to information available with Guinness World Records, the past records in similar category are the following:

1. The world record for the most trees planted in 24 hours by a team of 300 people is 254,464 and was achieved by the citizens of Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu, India on 1-2 October 2005. The event was organized by the Bitsunami Trust.

2. From 24-26 November 2000, in an event coordinated by Robert Osborne from The Tree Council based in London, UK, 107,781 trees were planted throughout the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Planting took place in 515 separate sites and approximately 10,700 adults and 20,000 children took part.

Talking about Project Green Hands, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Founder - Isha Foundation said, "We have all seen the devastating consequences of deforestation and global warming across the world in form of floods and hurricanes. One of the simplest ways to counter these effects is to plant more trees. Project Green Hands aims to focus on and spread a singular message - 'Trees give life, protect them'".

Isha Foundation's 'Project Green Hands' is a mass plantation drive that seeks to increase the green cover of Tamil Nadu from a mere 17% to the ideal 33% and to maintain the state's delicate ecological balance.
